Kamaruddin may have other aims for joining PAS - Dr Mahathir

Utusan Online (24/7/99): Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today former Tumpat Umno Chief Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar may have other aims for joining PAS such as to extend support for former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said this has occurred in Umno when Anwar was accepted into the party and it turned out that the former leader had other aspirations.

"I am worried over such type of people, they come in with other intentions. When I accepted Datuk Seri Anwar into Umno, I believed he will absorb Umno values... the Umno aspirations but it turned out that he had other intentions," Dr Mahathir said.

"He wanted to capture Umno from within and perhaps people like Kamaruddin Jaafar have also similar strategies," he told a news conference at the end of his two-day visit to Kelantan.

Dr Mahathir said this when asked about Kamaruddin's entry into PAS on Tuesday and the possibility of him bringing in Abim (Malaysian Muslim Youth Movement) influence into the party as he was considered close to Anwar.

There was talk earlier that Kamaruddin would apply to join Parti Keadilan Nasional after the Umno Supreme Council expelled him from the party.

The Prime Minister said Kamaruddin's move will help Umno in the General Election.

"It will be good if he (Kamaruddin) can do that to PAS."

"Insya-Allah, we (Umno) will win," he said.
