Umno not affected by Kamaruddin in PAS

Utusan Online (22/7/09): Former Tumpat Umno division chief Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar's turning to PAS will not affect Umno, said Umno secretary general Tan Sri Khalil Yaakob.

Kamaruddin was not an important personality when he was in Umno, he said.

Khalil, the Information Minister, said it is Kamaruddin's right to join any party he wishes.

''There is no need to play it up as Kamaruddin was not a minister nor an important personality in Umno,'' he told reporters here today.

Khalil was asked why Kamaruddin, a close friend of former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, chose to join PAS instead of Keadilan which is fighting for Anwar.

Kamaruddin yesterday announced he was joining PAS during a PAS ceramah in Tumpat which was attended by Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and PAS president Datuk Fadzil Noor.

Kuala Lumpur Umno head Datuk Suleiman Mohamed said the move by Kamaruddin to join PAS proves that the Umno Supreme Council was right in sacking him for betraying the party.

''It proved that he was guilty as charged. Otherwise, he would have appealed the decision,'' he said.

Suleiman said the main reason Kamaruddin joined PAS and not Keadilan was his wish to be fielded in the coming general election.

He said PAS had previously said it would not allocate any seat in Kelantan to Keadilan in the general election.

He added that by joining PAS, Kamaruddin also showed that he has no confidence in Keadilan.
