Kamaruddin's move to go on leave questioned

Utusan Online (19/5/99): The Kelantan Umno Management Committee will neither endorse nor reject the application by Tumpat Umno division chief Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar from taking leave from his post.

Rural Development Minister Datuk Annuar Musa said the committee felt there is no basis to accept or turn down his application as there is no precedent of a division chief asking for leave from performing his duties.

He said he had informed Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on the matter and will follow-up with a letter stating that it is inappropriate for a division chief to go on leave with an excuse to complete his book.

Voluntarily taking leave from his post only go to show that Kamaruddin is not capable of performing his party duties especially at a time when Umno was facing heavy responsibilities, he told a news conference called on the staging of the Puteri Saadong theatre here today.

Kamaruddin's move will prompt Umno members to question whether he is no longer committed to the party's struggles as he wants to go on leave by giving a lame excuse, said Annuar, who is also Deputy Kelantan Umno chief.

''We cannot have a non-committed leader at a crucial time like now. I hope leaders will not resort to play acting as for a good leader it is better to make a wrong decision than not to make any decision at all,'' he said.

Annuar also appealed to Umno leaders and those in government to refrain from issuing statements or taking actions that will create problems to the party.

Instead, they should toe the line of the leadership to face the current challenges, he said.

He said they must be prepared to defend whatever actions taken by the party and government without any reservations.
