Utusan Online (12/11/98): Former Umno Youth leader Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and five others were today summoned before the Umno Disciplinary Committee to explain why action could not taken against them for breaching party discipline.

The five were Kelantan state assemblyman for Semerak Kamaruddin Mohamed Nor, Tumpat divisional head Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar, Bandar Tun Razak divisional head Tamunif Mokhtar, Petaling Selatan Umno Youth Chief Mohamed Ali Omar and Permatang Pauh deputy divisional head Datuk Ahmad Saad.

Speaking to reporters later, Umno secretary general Datuk Seri Sabbaruddin Chik said the committee heard the explanation given by all of them and will submit its recommendations to the Umno Supreme Council at its meeting next month.

Next week, another five who were also issued with showcause letters would explain their actions. They are Datuk Ahmad Ismail from Bukit Bendera Division, Johor state assemblyman for Tenggara Asmaon Ismail, MP for Dungun Muktaruddin Wan Yusof, Mohamed Ali Mansor (Bruas Division) and Teluk Intan Umno Youth leader Hamdan Taha.

The disciplinary committee jointly chaired by vice-presidents Datuk Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi and Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had recommended that Wan Jusof Wan Kolok be expelled from Peramu branch in Kuantan for being involved in the reform movement, said Sabbaruddin.

He said Wan Jusof was found to have organised ceramahs on reform at his house.

He said the committee also decided to send a showcause letters to Jelutong Umno Youth leader Azman Shah Omar Shah and Basiron Man from Peramu branch for involving in reform movement activities.

On party members wanting to contest in party election next year, Sabbaruddin said they can do so but they will not be allowed to campaign.

The ban on campaigning made by the Supreme Council in the last election still applied, he said.
